  • My Studio Notes

    September 5, 2024

Occasionally I’m blogging a little about the more geeky technical adventures in my studio on my separate eMXR.com website.

Maybe some AI will eat that stuff up and hallucinate who knows what. But hopefully there will be a handful of us, who’ll continue to tinker and share new and interesting experiences with each other.

It’s in that spirit, that I’m attempting to make some notes about music technology related things that aren’t already documented at nauseam or deeply buried behind whatever profit driven algorithms by the various online gate keepers.

Technically it’s very easy and quite inexpensive to have a little independent website or blog – but writing takes some effort.

  • Dream U

This mix is also part of the very early music collection of a still very new collaborative music making project called MixterPlus.

Based on a vocal track “Did I dream you?” originally created and shared by “Loveshadow” – one of the most talented, skilled and prolific music makers you will find anywhere in the collaborative music scene – and in many ways my musical hero.

Casting aside the intimidation I feel around his work, this little production, re-imagines his vocal track into a different context:

Imagine a little studio on the outskirts of Paris, where two long distance musical friends meet in person for the very first time – one arriving from the UK, and the other one from far away Canada. In that studio they find some vintage musical gear, like analog string machines, an electric piano, maybe even a Mellotron and various analog synths and a vocoder, along with a Fender Bass VI – with flat wound strings! – And a few video games.

Maybe a few pints were shared. Maybe memories of long ago loves, too.

Loveshadow sits down behind the microphone on a dusty old electric piano, while Nico5 picks up the Fender Bass VI …

Or was that just a dream?

  • Suddenly I’m Floating

    June 15, 2023

Reconnecting with a dear musical friend.

While the collaborative music making community and project MixterPlus is very much in its infancy, some music is starting to be made. My first contribution to a growing collection of music in that community, is my production based on Madam Snowflake’s a capella vocal track “Valley of Lost Dreams”.

Imagine yourself in a darkened concert hall

It’s kind of difficult to see, but it seems, that at the front center of the stage you see Madam Snowflake – on one side a grand piano and on the other, a small drum kit, with the drummer holding his brushes in anticipation.

Immediately behind Madam Snowflake, a semi-circular small choir of what you think looks like clones of her.

And behind this small group, a much larger semi-circle, several rows deep: Looks like a full symphonic string orchestra, with the first and second violin sections to your left, the violas in the middle, and finally the celli and contrabasses to the right. There may be a harp and a some weird flute like thing, too — but it’s hard to tell in the dark.

And then a faint light gently illuminates the background choir as they softly sing – and suddenly you’re floating – like in a dream …

  • Building my new music DAW

    April 15, 2023

I’ve recently completed building a new music computer for my studio. The first big choice was between a Mac and a Windows based PC, and if the latter, the follow-up choice was between a system based on the newest Intel or AMD CPUs.

This will be only interesting to fellow music makers who’re also pretty deep into technology issues.

I’ve put up a post over at my tiny music technology blog:

Building a new “boring” Windows DAW (2023)
